I.e., yes, Sam is actually 20 and only 8 years younger than Gabriel, despite Gabriel calling himself far too old for poor innocent young Sam who can't possibly know what he wants.

An extract from the town annals.

Kept by Jody Mills. Bold and underlined text indicates a death, and would be represented in red ink in the annals. Italics represent Jody’s pencil-jottings in the margins.

4 kalends May. Cassie Robinson, angel (male, blond, steel-grey wings). Too many half-trained civilians on hunts. Depleted number of hunters not an excuse for depleting everyone else.

Kalends May. Killed: four ghouls, at the old barrows, by Rufus Turner, Dean Winchester, Gordon Walker, Bela Talbot, Samuel Winchester. Walker and Turner injured.

4 nones May. Signs of disease among the cattle. Two dead. Probably containable.

3 nones May. Killed: one angel (the one who killed C. Robinson). Death blow Dean Winchester; downed by Samuel Winchester, Ellen Harvelle.

6 ides May. Abel Turner, old age and wet lungs. The infant son of Christian and Arlene Campbell, wet lungs and weakness.

3 ides May. Pedlar Gabriel arrived.

Ides May. Gabriel, pedlar. Angel. Disguised for years. They can hide their wings, and speak? Locked in cattle press in barn for Bobby’s research, mourned as dead. Make more comprehensive entry when Bobby works out what the hell is going on.

14 kalends June. It won’t speak, and isn’t healing. B. obviously disturbed. Have set Colt and Andy to carving protective sigils under the lintel of the Gate, so angels can’t pass under lintel any more than fly over walls. How many pedlars and other Outsiders have been disguised angels?

Kalends June. William Harvelle, Isaac Peccatorum. Cause of death unclear, bellies and throats ripped open with claws. Angel hunt gone badly wrong in fir forest near third ravine, hunters stumbled into ambush or old curse, smoke or cloudy darkness (demonic?), vicious things in the dark. All witnesses confused. Badly injured: Annie Hawkins, Christopher Birch, Victor Henriksen, Allan Britton. One angel winged and brought down, but lost in the confusion (dark hair, black or dark blue wings, male). Sam W. vanished. B. says SW stayed to hunt down the injured angel, but suspect him of lying: too rude to not be deflecting attention away from something. & DW grim and white as a frozen sheet, & making no attempt to ride out to help him.

4 nones June. Annie Hawkins, of injuries sustained. Joanna Harvelle, Mark Campbell, Gwen Campbell, Dean Winchester rode out to track down injured angel, but trail cold. No sign of SW. DW came back hours after the others, rode out again with change of horse and food for several days, to look for him. Should know better than to be out in the marches alone in this state. & too near dark of the moon.

Nones June. Angel Gabriel escaped overnight. Damaged wall near old orchard to escape. Looks like DW let him out – sigils effaced on wall, pedlar’s caravan and horse gone too and tracks leading away from Gates, door of barn and mechanism of press not forced, bespelled collar unlocked and abandoned in barn, DW’s horse left wandering near Gates. Andy on gate duty last night, says DW relieved of him c. 11:30, hadn’t mentioned it because he was gullible enough to believe DW when he claimed to have returned yesterday afternoon. Told him to hold his tongue and claim he fell asleep at post. Everyone too stirred up already, and I’m not the only one who can put two and two together. Full hunt gone out after wagon tracks.

The pedlar did have soft spot for Sam. DW far enough gone to think a monster will help him find his brother? Demonic influence? Can angels put an influence on people?

Gwen Campbell, rockfall. Gabriel thwarted hunt at border of land: slew a mountain etayn and let it fall so it crushed the ravines and blocked road. Injured: Robert Singer, Rufus Turner, Joanna Harvelle, Andrew Gallagher, Gordon Walker, Mark Campbell, and most others present to varying degrees. Dean Winchester recovered, passed all tests for possession and influences and substitution thrown at him by Singer and Turner. Existence of archangels apparently not a myth: Gabriel wields flaming golden sword, not slender silver. No sign of SW. No explanation from DW, except that we violated guest sanctity by locking G. away. Doesn’t add up: why block a mountain road to defend the retreat of a creature with wings? Has to be about Sam somehow: everything is, with Dean. Bobby in no state to worm anything out of him: legs badly crushed, may need amputation.

Looking back over annals in the years since I began keeping them, never have I used my pencil so much. I don’t know how to shape any of this into a fit state for ink and history: I don’t understand, and I will not write it wrong.

15 kalends July. Demonic activity stepping up. Unprecedented organisation: some even seem to be working together.

8 kalends July. Bela Talbot, demon. James Barnes, possessed by demon. Leaving the protection of the walls, even to hunt, forbidden to all for the foreseeable future. The demons are even hanging around the Gates. We are under siege.

So was Balthazar older than Gabriel or younger?

Gabriel was in that barn for 3 weeks? Yeah, being captured and threatened and having to hear the drunks in the square plotting what they were going to do to him would have given anyone nightmares. I'm a bit worried about where the touch-aversion came from, though...

Well, no one would have actually touched him. No one would have dared open the door, for one thing, though if they'd actually decided to go with the torture option (as Bobby and Dean and others have, doubtless, for some other creatures in the past) they could have daubed up some of the other bars and grilles and dropped them in place to pin him into a smaller area.

Which Gabriel would have known. All Bobby ever did was talk to (at) him from outside the cage, but Gabriel would have been constantly aware of the possibility of more - especially once people started getting nasty and he could hear it from inside.

So, yes, three weeks of hating the space he's trapped in and clinging to it as a flimsy refuge that's liable to be violated any time, of not being touched and missing and dreading it because of what touch would mean now, because even if it isn't torture it's control and compulsion and a trap.

No one actually laid a hand on him during that time - the only skin-on-skin contact he had with anyone was him reaching out to Sam through the bars (and of course punching Dean) - but he was imagining it vividly enough to have a lasting effect.
